Crest designs are the basis of Northwest Coast art. They make visible all elements of the natural and supernatural world. Within First Nations communities, particular crests identify a family lineage. Crests are visual representations of family owned stories, and they often depict family histories. Both crests and the stories they represent are passed on from one generation to the next. While Northwest Coast artists will use the same basic design elements to depict familiar crest designs, each artist creates these shapes in his own unique style. While crests in Northwest Coast art have similar symbolism, each family or community has their own specific stories about their crests. Depending on the nation, community, and family, crests can have different meanings and varying significance. The following are some basic interpretations of more common Northwest Coast crest designs. Often, these understandings are based on the natural traits or strengths of the animal represented. |
